Photographer born in Long Island, New York,
Collaborated with Raf Simons and influenced the fashion world.

It's too simplistic to label Robert Mapplethorpe's work as "breaking taboos" or "controversial." There's no doubt that the images Mapplethorpe, born in Long Island, New York, created over 18 years from 1970 to 1988 symbolize the downtown scene of New York at the time, but something more universal is woven into them. If I were to express it in a single word, it would be "primal desire." However, on the other hand, a sense of "restraint" also underlies his work. His classical style, reminiscent of sculptures, seems to tell of the tension between our outer and inner selves.
