I tested the metal, and it passed for 9 k white gold, I have not seen another like it. The top and bottom are not sterling silver, does not pass the sterling silver test. With that being said it has never been polished, and still holds an incredible shiny well polished top from an estate sale in New Hampshire. The repoussé floral inlay wrap around entire box is an unknown metal, but looks to be sterling silver. It opens to reveal the original pink cotton pad, the photo locket side and the lacquered bottom. I believe it is just plated gold or a different material.
Back in the Edwardian, Victorian days these snuff boxes were also used to get rid of bad odors with a pleasant-smelling liquid, such as this one. It also doubles as a top locket to hold a photo and the bottom inside is thinly lacquered in a cream color.
